• Hailing from Houston Texas, Destiny's Child are now one of the biggest girl groups
in the world. Kelly, Beyonce and Michelle have experienced the ups and downs of stardom,
including heartbreaks, accusations, and a lawsuit filed against them by two ex-members,
but Destiny's Child have come through it all proving that they truly are Survivors and their
third album 'Survivor' is their biggest selling to date!
Having sold more than 35 million records worldwide, you would find it hard to believe
that it all started in a little hair salon in Houston. Destiny's Child started off as a
quartet in 1990, with group members Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, and
LaTavia Roberson. They initially rose to fame when their debut single No, No, No, reached
the Billboard Top 5 in 1998. Two albums, five singles later, LaTavia and LeToya made an
unexpected exit, leaving Beyonce and Kelly with no choice but to recruit two new members.
These two lucky women were Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. Michelle was willing to
fly all the way down to Houston to try out for the group, so right there told us she was
serious. When she walked into our living room, Kelly and I were sitting next to each other
on the couch, and we just looked at the each other. We were thinking of the same thing:
She's the one! We could tell instantly!''.
Now that Destiny's Child were back as a quartet, they were ready to start filming their
video for Say My Name, but as the video went out, people soon realised that there was no
LeToya and LaTavia to be found, replaced instead by two new faces. This only added to the
drama. They were on the front of magazines that they couldn't get before, and everybody
was talking about the new line-up. ''People were saying things like, 'Oh, did you see the new
Destiny's Child? They replaced two girls! Watch the video and see if you can pick out the new
recruits.' It was like a game for people to play,'' recalls Beyonce, about how people reacted
to the group changes.
'''Your perfect - now change!' That was what the record label told us. When Michelle and
Farrah joined we said to them, 'Look if you want to be in the group, you're going to have
to be willing to dye your hair. At least for just like six months, and then you can probably
get out of it.' They were fine with that.'' Later in an interview Farrah complained that she
had to dye her hair to be part of Destiny's Child. She wasn't very happy, which later led to
her departure from the group in July 2000, leaving Destiny's Child as a trio.
''The time Kelly, Beyonce and I had in Australia was our time to figure out how we would
make it - how we would survive - just as the three of us. We decided that we would love one
another and always be there for one another - and our fans.'' Destiny's Child were now stronger
than ever. ''We knew everything had happened for a reason. God had His hand on our group,
and it was going to work out just fine - it was as if the writing had already been written
on the wall.
With fifteen awards under their sequined belt, including one Brit award for Best International
Group and two Grammies, one for Best R&B performance and another for Best R&B song, both for
Say My Name, 2000 was definitely Destiny's Child's year. They also had their first UK #1 album
Survivor, two UK #1 singles, Independent Women and Survivor, and seven Top 10 hits, Destiny's
Child are truly living up to their name as one of the biggest girl groups in the world.
And what does the future hold for Destiny's Child? Well, the girls are currently doing solo projects,
Michelle turning to Gospel with My Heart To Yours, Kelly experimenting with a bit of rock/R&B for her album
Simply Deep, and Beyonce going soul on her Dangerously in Love record. With the girls doing so well,
(Michelle's album went straight in at #1 in the Gospel Charts, Kelly's Simply Deep beat Justin Timberlake to the #1 album spot,
Beyonce's first big screen movie, Austin Powers in Goldmember,
going straight in at #1 in the film charts, and her Dangerously In Love topped the UK charts for 5 weeks!)
it looks as if the girls are over the moon. But does this mean the end of Destiny's Child? ''Hell No!'' shouts, Kelly.
"Michelle and Beyonce are like my sisters. I can assure you that a new album will be out either at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year.
The girls and I will be heading to the studio to record our 4th album together this September.
Then after that we'll be putting together a tour. This next record of ours will be our best ever,
I know for a fact that everyone will grow individually, both vocally and emotionally, so it will be interesting to hear gospel,
rock and soul sounds put together.
